Proverbs Chapter 16
Proverbs Concerning the King
(1~9절) 응답은 하나님이 하심
(Verses 1–9) The answer is God's doing.
1. 마음의 경영은 사람에게 있어도
말의 응답은 여호와께로부터 나오느니라
To man belong the plans of the heart,
but from the LORD comes the reply of the tongue.
2. 사람의 행위가 자기 보기에는 모두 깨끗하여도
여호와는 심령을 감찰하시느니라
All a man's ways seem innocent to him,
but motives are weighed by the LORD.
여호와는 심령을 감찰하시느니라 ⇒
하나님은 사람의 마음과 동기를 아심.
따라서 겉으로 나타나는 행위에 근거하여
사람을 판단하시지는 않음.
The LORD searches the heart ⇒
God knows a person's heart and motives.
Therefore, He does not judge people
based solely on their outward actions.
3. 너의 행사를 여호와께 맡기라
그리하면 네가 경영하는 것이 이루어지리라
Commit to the LORD whatever you do,
and your plans will succeed.
여기에 `맡기다`라는 히브리어 단어는
`굴려 보낸다`는 뜻으로 `모든 일의 주도권을
인간 편에서 하나님께로 굴려보낸다`는 뜻입니다.
이것은 어떤 일을 경영하는 처음부터
하나님이 원하시는 뜻이 무엇인지를 살피고,
그 뜻대로 일을 경영하면서 그 과정과 결과까지도
다 여호와께 맡기고 의지하여
하나님이 주시는 힘과 지혜로 일을 이루라는 뜻입니다.
The Hebrew word for "entrust" used here
carries the meaning of "rolling away"—
specifically, the act of "rolling the initiative for all matters
from the human side over to God."
This signifies that, from the very inception of any undertaking,
one should discern God's will; then,
while managing the work in accordance with that will,
one should entrust the entire process—including the final outcome—
wholly to the Lord, relying upon Him
to bring the work to completion through the strength
and wisdom He provides.
4. 여호와께서 온갖 것을 그 쓰임에 적당하게 지으셨나니
악인도 악한 날에 적당하게 하셨느니라
The LORD works out everything for his own ends--
even the wicked for a day of disaster.
그 쓰임에 적당하게 ⇒
‘그 고유의 목적에 알맞게’라는 뜻임.
본절은 하나님께서 주권적인 섭리에 따라
온 우주 만물을 의미있게 창조하셨음을 교훈하고 있음.
그래서 하나님은 심지어 악인들을 통해서도
그분의 능력을 드러내시고, 또한 모든 악에 대한
심판을 통해 그분의 공의를 나타내시는 것임.
악인도 악한 날에 적당하게 하셨느니라 ⇒
하나님이 악인을 만드신다는 뜻이 아니라
죄를 범한 사람을 적당한 때에 하나님이 심판하신다는 뜻임.
"For its proper use" ⇒
This signifies "in accordance with its specific, inherent purpose."
This verse teaches that God, in accordance with His sovereign providence,
created the entire universe and everything within it with meaning and purpose.
Thus, God reveals His power even through the wicked,
and demonstrates His justice through the judgment of all evil.
"He has fitted the wicked for the day of evil" ⇒
This does not mean that God creates wicked people;
rather, it signifies that God judges those who have committed sin at the appropriate time.
5. 무릇 마음이 교만한 자를 여호와께서 미워하시나니
피차 손을 잡을지라도
벌을 면하지 못하리라
The LORD detests all the proud of heart.
Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.
6. 인자와 진리로 인하여 죄악이 속하게 되고
여호와를 경외함으로 말미암아 악에서 떠나게 되느니라
Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for;
through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil.
인자와 진리 ⇒ 구약에서 인자는 ‘인애, 긍휼, 사랑’등으로
진리는 ‘진실, 신실’등으로 이해되고 있으며
두 가지는 종종 하나님께서
사람에게 요구하시는
도덕적 행동의 표준으로 제시되고 있음.
7. 사람의 행위가 여호와를 기쁘시게 하면
그 사람의 원수라도 그와 더불어 화목하게 하시느니라
When a man's ways are pleasing to the LORD,
he makes even his enemies live at peace with him.
8. 적은 소득이 공의를 겸하면
많은 소득이 불의를 겸한 것보다 나으니라
Better a little with righteousness than
much gain with injustice.
9. 사람이 마음으로 자기의 길을 계획할지라도
그의 걸음을 인도하시는 이는 여호와시니라
In his heart a man plans his course,
but the LORD determines his steps.
본 절 들은 사람들의 모든 삶이
하나님의 주권적인 섭리 아래 있음을 강조하고 있음.
즉 사람들은 이 세상을 살아가면서 이런저런 계획들을 세우고
그것들을 위해 노력도 하지만 결국 그것들을 실현시키는 분은
여호와 하나님이시라는 것임. 그러므로 마땅히 사람들은
겸손한 자세로 자신의 계획과 일들을 하나님의 섭리에 맡겨야 함.
즉 자신의 조그만 지식과 경험에 비추어 맞지 않는다고 해서
하나님의 뜻을 거역 한다거나 아예 하나님의 뜻을 묻지도 않고
일을 진행시키는 교만과 어리석음은 피해야 할 것임.
These verses emphasize that every aspect of human life falls
under the sovereign providence of God.
In other words, while people formulate various plans
and strive to achieve them as they navigate this world,
it is ultimately Jehovah God who brings those plans to fruition.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon people to humbly entrust their plans
and endeavors to God's providence. Specifically,
they must guard against the arrogance and folly of defying God's will—simply because it does not align with their own limited knowledge and experience—or of proceeding with their affairs without ever seeking God's guidance.
(10~19절) 왕에 대한 잠언
(Verses 10–19) Proverbs concerning the King
10. 하나님의 말씀이 왕의 입술에 있은즉 재판할 때에
그의 입이 그르치지 아니하리라
The lips of a king speak as an oracle,
and his mouth should not betray justice.
이스라엘에서는 왕을 하나님의 대리자로 여겼으므로
왕의 판단은 하나님의 말씀처럼 존중되었음(왕상 3:28).
11. 공평한 저울과 접시저울은 여호와의 것이요
주머니 속의 저울추도 다 그가 지으신 것이니라
Honest scales and balances are from the LORD;
all the weights in the bag are of his making.
공평한 저울과 접시저울 ⇒ 당시 히브리 인들은
수평 막대의 중간에 끈을 매거나 받침대를 괴어 놓고
막대의 양끝에 접시를 올려놓은 저울을 사용하였음.
따라서 이 저울은 오늘날의 저울처럼 정교하지 않아
교묘하게 남의 눈을 속일 수도 있었음.
그러므로 공정한 저울은 정직함, 상징함,
공의로움을 상징하는 것임.
Fair Scales and Balance Scales ⇒
In those times, the Hebrews
used scales consisting of a horizontal beam—
suspended by a cord at its center or balanced upon a fulcrum—
with pans placed at both ends of the beam.
Consequently, as these scales lacked the precision of modern weighing instruments,
they could be manipulated with cunning to deceive the unsuspecting eye.
Therefore, a "fair scale" serves as a symbol of honesty
and of justice.
12. 악을 행하는 것은 왕들이 미워할 바니
이는 그 보좌가 공의로 말미암아 굳게 섬이니라
Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established
through righteousness.
한 나라의 통치자가 자기 나라에서 불의와 부정직이
만연하도록 방치한다면 백성들의 저항으로
그의 통치권이 흔들리게 될 것임.
잠언은 왕의 통치 방법으로 악한 조언자를 물리치고,
뇌물을 물리치며, 가난한 사람을 공정하게
재판할 것을 교훈하고 있음.
13. 의로운 입술은 왕들이 기뻐하는 것이요
정직하게 말하는 자는 그들의 사랑을 입느니라
Kings take pleasure in honest lips;
they value a man who speaks the truth.
14. 왕의 진노는 죽음의 사자들과 같아도
지혜로운 사람은 그것을 쉬게 하리라
A king's wrath is a messenger of death,
but a wise man will appease it.
왕의 진노는 죽음의 사자들과 같아도
⇒ 누구든지 왕의 노여움을 사면
당장 죽임을 당한다는 뜻임.
15. 왕의 희색은 생명을 뜻하나니
그의 은택이 늦은 비를 내리는 구름과 같으니라
When a king's face brightens, it means life;
his favor is like a rain cloud in spring.
늦은 비 ⇒ 팔레스타인에서
추수하기 직전인 3~4월에 내리는 봄비를 말함.
이 비는 곡식을 여물게 하는 데 꼭 필요한 비이기 때문에
장차 다가올 좋은 일을 상징함.
16. 지혜를 얻는 것이 금을 얻는 것보다 얼마나 나은고
명철을 얻는 것이 은을 얻는 것보다 더욱 나으니라
How much better to get wisdom than gold,
to choose understanding rather than silver!
17. 악을 떠나는 것은 정직한 사람의 대로이니
자기의 길을 지키는 자는 자기의 영혼을 보전하느니라
The highway of the upright avoids evil;
he who guards his way guards his life.
18. 교만은 패망의 선봉이요
거만한 마음은 넘어짐의 앞잡이니라
Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.
19. 겸손한 자와 함께 하여 마음을 낮추는 것이
교만한 자와 함께 하여 탈취물을 나누는 것보다 나으니라
Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed
than to share plunder with the proud.
(20~33절) 여호와를 의지하라
(Verses 20–33) Trust in the LORD
20. 삼가 말씀에 주의하는 자는
좋은 것을 얻나니 여호와를 의지하는 자는
복이 있느니라
Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers,
and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
21. 마음이 지혜로운 자는 명철하다
일컬음을 받고 입이 선한 자는
남의 학식을 더하게 하느니라
The wise in heart are called discerning,
and pleasant words promote instruction.
22. 명철한 자에게는 그 명철이
생명의 샘이 되거니와 미련한 자에게는
그 미련한 것이 징계가 되느니라
Understanding is a fountain of life to
those who have it, but folly brings
punishment to fools.
23. 지혜로운 자의 마음은 그의 입을 슬기롭게 하고
또 그의 입술에 지식을 더하느니라
A wise man's heart guides his mouth,
and his lips promote instruction.
24. 선한 말은 꿀송이 같아서
마음에 달고 뼈에 양약이 되느니라
Pleasant words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
25. 어떤 길은 사람이 보기에 바르나
필경은 사망의 길이니라
There is a way that seems right to a man,
but in the end it leads to death.
26. 고되게 일하는 자는 식욕으로 말미암아 애쓰나니
이는 그의 입이 자기를 독촉함이니라
The laborer's appetite works for him;
his hunger drives him on.
27. 불량한 자는 악을 꾀하나니
그 입술에는 맹렬한 불같은 것이 있느니라
A scoundrel plots evil,
and his speech is like a scorching fire.
28. 패역한 자는 다툼을 일으키고
말쟁이는 친한 벗을 이간하느니라
A perverse man stirs up dissension,
and a gossip separates close friends.
29. 강포한 사람은 그 이웃을 꾀어
좋지 아니한 길로 인도하느니라
A violent man entices his neighbor
and leads him down a path that is not good.
30. 눈짓을 하는 자는 패역한 일을 도모하며
입술을 닫는 자는 악한 일을 이루느니라
He who winks with his eye is plotting perversity;
he who purses his lips is bent on evil.
31. 백발은 영화의 면류관이라
공의로운 길에서 얻으리라
Gray hair is a crown of splendor;
it is attained by a righteous life.
청년은 힘을 자랑하지만 노인은 백발을 자랑함.
여기에서 ‘영화의 면류관’은 일평생
의로운 생활을 한 사람의 고상한 아름다움을 뜻함.
32. 노하기를 더디하는 자는 용사보다 낫고
자기의 마음을 다스리는 자는
성을 빼앗는 자보다 나으니라
Better a patient man than a warrior,
a man who controls his temper
than one who takes a city.
33. 제비는 사람이 뽑으나
모든 일을 작정하기는 여호와께 있느니라
The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the LORD.
제비뽑기의 결과는 하나님의
섭리로 받아 들여졌음.

이루고자 하는 모든 일들을
내가 하려하지 말고
하나님께 맡겨야 한다
Rather than attempting to accomplish
all the things I wish to achieve on my own,
I must entrust them to God.

하나님 아버지
오늘도 하나님의 말씀 잠언 16장으로
묵상하며 기도합니다
신자, 불신자를 막론하고 인생에서 성공하고자 하는 소망은
모든 사람에게 있습니다. 또 그것을 이루기 위하여
자신이 하는 일이나 계획에 대하여
성공적인 경영을 하길 원하고 있음을 압니다
이러한 까닭에 시중 서점에는 무수하게 많은
성공적 경영에 관한 책들이 쌓여 있다는 것도 압니다
인간이 행하는 모든 행사가
여호와 하나님의 주권 아래 있음을 가르쳐 주며,
모든 행사를 여호와께 맡기고 공의를 행하며
악에서 떠나도록 교훈하고 있다는 것을 알게 하소서
또한 이것이 그리스도인들의 성공전략이며,
최고의 경영방법임을 설명해 주고 있음을 알고 배우게 하소서
`네가 하는 일을 여호와께 맡겨라.
그러면 네가 생각하는 것이 이루어질 것이다.`(잠16:3) 처럼
어떤 일을 경영하는 처음부터
하나님이 원하시는 뜻이 무엇인지를 살피고,
그 뜻대로 일을 경영하면서 그 과정과 결과까지도
다 여호와께 맡기고 의지하여
하나님이 주시는 힘과 지혜로 일을 이루라는 뜻임을
마음으로 알고 배우게 하소서
우리들은 인생의 만사를 자기가 주인이 되어 주장하는 일이 많습니다
하나님의 뜻을 좇아 하나님이 주시는 힘과 지혜로 살아감으로써
그 행사가 형통하는 복을 누리도록 해야 함을 알게 하시고
모사(謀事)는 사람에게 달려 있어도,
성사(成事)는 하나님께 달려있음 또한 알게 하시옵소서
악을 멀리하고, 하나님의 법도를 사랑하며,
그를 섬기는 길만이 우리의 경영을 이루는 방법임을 배우게 하소서
하나님은 모든 일에 있어서 그 걸음을 인도하시며,
인류의 생사화복을 주장하시는 분이시니 이 하나님을 의지하며,
우리의 경영을 하나님께 맡겨야 함을 알고 행하게 하소서
어지럽고 혼돈의 세계정세에 하나님이 함께 하시고
가족 모두 일원 한사람 한사람을 보살펴 주시고
주위의 우리를 아는 모든 사람들에게도 축복 내려주시고
병중에 있는 사람들을 하루속히 회복하게 하시고
힘든일을 겪고 있는 모든이들에게 하루속히 해결할 수 있는
힘을 주소서
각자의 일터에 안전과 평안을 주시옵소서
오늘도 Trial에 임하는 영준이의 머리에 손을 얹으사
긴장하지 않게 하시고
그동안 익히고 훈련한 모든 능력을
아낌없이 발휘할 수 있게 하시고
눈동자 같이 지키시어 다치지 않게 하시고
평안한 마음으로 Trial에 임하게 하소서
하나님의 보호아래 오늘의 Trial을 무사히 마칠 수 있게
하나님의 날개밑에 두시고 보호하여 주소서
같이 참여하는 동료들도 하나님이 살피시고
Trial 을 주관하는 모든 시험관들의
마음에도 주님의 손길을 주시어
모든 일과가 순조롭게
잘 이루어질 수 있게 하소서
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Today, once again,
I meditate upon and pray through Your Word
—Proverbs, Chapter 16.
Whether believer or non-believer,
the desire to achieve success in life resides within every human heart.
I know, too, that to realize this desire,
people yearn to exercise successful stewardship over the work
they undertake and the plans they formulate.
For this very reason,
I am aware that countless books on the subject
of successful management are stacked high
on the shelves of bookstores everywhere.
Grant me the understanding to recognize
that every human endeavor lies beneath the sovereign authority of the Lord God;
and that Your Word instructs us to entrust all our undertakings to the Lord,
to practice righteousness, and to turn away from evil.
Furthermore, let me come to know and learn that this
—and this alone—constitutes the true strategy for success for Christians,
and represents the ultimate method of stewardship.
"Commit to the Lord whatever you do."
"So shall your thoughts be established" (Proverbs 16:3)—just as this verse suggests—
Grant us the grace to understand and learn in our hearts
that, from the very inception of any undertaking,
we must discern what God’s will is;
that we must conduct our affairs in accordance with that will;
and that we must entrust and rely entirely upon the Lord
—including both the process and the outcome—
so that we may accomplish our work through the strength and wisdom that God provides.
We often tend to act as the masters of our own lives,
attempting to control every aspect of our existence.
Help us realize that we ought to live by following God’s will
and relying on the strength and wisdom He grants,
thereby enabling us to enjoy the blessing of prosperity in all our endeavors.
Grant us also the understanding that while "the plans of the heart belong to man,"
"the answer of the tongue [or the accomplishment of the deed] is from the Lord."
Teach us that turning away from evil, loving God’s statutes,
and walking in the path of serving Him is the only true way to bring our plans to fruition.
Since God guides our steps in all matters
and holds dominion over the life, death, and destiny of all humanity,
help us to rely upon this God,
and grant us the wisdom and resolve to entrust all our plans into His hands.
May God be with us amidst the turbulent and chaotic state of the world today.
May He watch over and care for every single member of our family.
May He bestow His blessings upon all those around us who know us.
May He grant a speedy recovery to all who are currently suffering from illness.
And to all those facing difficult trials,
may He grant the strength to find a swift resolution to their struggles.
Grant safety and peace to each of us in our respective workplaces.
Today, as Young-jun faces his trial, lay Your hand upon his head;
calm his nerves and keep him free from anxiety.
Enable him to fully and unreservedly demonstrate all the skills and knowledge
he has diligently acquired and honed over this time.
Guard him as the apple of Your eye, protecting him from any harm,
and grant him a peaceful heart as he enters into this trial.
May he successfully complete today’s trial,
safe under the shelter of God’s protection. May we remain
sheltered beneath Your wings, O God, and be kept safe.
May You watch over the colleagues participating alongside us,
and may Your guiding hand touch the hearts
of all the examiners presiding over this trial,
so that every scheduled activity
may proceed smoothly and successfully.
