영준이가 훈련중 사격대회 나갔을 때

영준이 5학년쯤일때

영준이가 어렸을 때

이런 자잘한 이야기들을 섞은 편지를

일주일에 두 번 애틀랜타에 있는 방송국에

보내곤 했다

I used to send  a letter when my son was young, containing these samll stories

on a broadcast station in Atlanta twice a week. 

 

이렇게 보낸 편지들은 

멋지고 아름다운 아나운서의 목소리로

방송에 나온 편지를 녹음해 영준이에게

들려주곤 했었다

 

The letters sent like this were recited

by a announcer with wonderful and beautiful voice.

I recorded the that broadcasting contents on the air and

have my son listen.

 

 

 

참으로 오래된 편지 한 통을 꺼내 읽어본다

I take out a really old letter and read it again..

쉰 번째 이야기편지 50th Story Letter

 

 

사랑하는 영준아

Dear my lovely Son,  Bobby,  

오늘도 날은 화창하고 멋진 날이구나

Today is also..fine and beautiful day..

오늘은 어제 약속한..영화에 나왔던 다른 글을 보내줄게..

Today , I will send you another story that appeared in the movie, as promised yesterday

 

 

 

****

 

어느 깊은 가을밤 잠에서 깨어난 제자가 울고 있었어

One deep fall late night, the disciple woke up and was crying

 

그 모습을 본 스승이 기이하게 여겨 제자에게 물어본 거야..

When the master saw that, he thought it was strange and asked his disciple.

 

 "무서운 꿈을 꾸었느냐?"

"Did you have a scary nightmare?" 

 

" 아닙니다"

"No" 

"슬픈 꿈을 꾸었느냐?"

"Did you have a sad dream?"

" 아닙니다."

"No"

그리고 제자는 대답했단다...

and the disciple answered

"달콤한 꿈을 꾸었습니다"

"I had a sweet dream." 

 "그런데 왜 그리 슬피 우느냐?"

"Then why are you crying so sadly?" 

 

제자는 흐르는 눈물을 닦으며 나지막이 말했대

The disciple said quietly while wiping his tears.

 

 "그 꿈은 이루어질 수 없기 때문입니다."

"Because that dream cannot come true."

 

  *

 

영준아.. 사람들은 다 꿈을 가지고 있고

모든 꿈을 이루기 위해노력을 하며..

그 꿈을 위해 올바른 선택을 하며 사는 거란다..

 

Youngjoon, eveyone has a dream,

working hard to make all their dream come true

It's about making the right choice and living for that dream

 

때로는 사람들의 잘못된 선택으로

정말 자신의 꿈과는 다른 곳에 와있는 사람들이 있단다..

Sometimes due to people's wrong choices

There are people who are really in a different place than their dreams.

 

그 꿈이 이루어지지 못한다는 것을 알기 때문에 슬퍼할 때는 이미 때가 늦은 거라는 거지....

It's already too late to be sad because you know that your dream won't come true..

 

엄마는 영준이가 영준이의 꿈을 위해늘 바른 선택을 하고

그 꿈을 위해 노력하는 영준이가 될 거라 믿는단다..

Mom always believe that you make the right choices for your dream,

and you will work hard for that dream all the time..

 

오늘도 저녁 맛있는 거 해줄게..

 

I'll make you something delicious today's dinner, too

내가 이 편지를 영준이한테 보낸 후

얼마 있지 않아 

유키 구라모토의 Romance 음악이 흐르며

버드나무 가지가 이리저리 흔들리는 가운

아래의 내레이션이 있는 동영상을 보내왔다..

After I sent this letter to my son, he sent a video  Yuki Kuramoto's "Romance" music

flows and  willow tree branches swaying here and there  with  narration below

 

정말 너무 놀랬다

영준이는 여기서 태어나서

여기서 한글을 배웠다

 He was born here and learn Korean here in the Unite States.

어릴 때부터 가르쳐 고등학교 졸업할 때까지

정말 열심히 배운 한글 실력으로 7학년(14살) 때 

엄마가 영화에서 좋아했던 글귀를 보냈더니

바로 그 영화에서 처음 내레이션으로 나왔던 

그 부분을 내게 보내왔다.

ㅎㅎㅎ 

Taught from a young age until graduating from high school

He learned Korean Language skills very hard.

When he was in 7th grade(14 years old),

He sent me a above quotes back to my quote letter to him from a movie.

 어느 맑은 봄날, 바람에 이리저리 휘날리는 나뭇가지를 바라보며 제자가 물었다.

One clear spring day the disciple asked while looking at the tree branches

blowing here and there in the wind.

 

 

"스승님, 저것은 나뭇가지가 움직이는 겁니까? 바람이 움직이는 것입니까?"

"Master, are those three branches moving? is that the wind moving?"

 

스승은 제자가 가리키는 곳은 보지도 않은 채 웃으며 말했다.

The Master smiled and said without even looking at where the disciple was pointing.

 

"무릇 움직이는 것은 나뭇가지도 아니고 바람도 아니며, 네 마음뿐이다."

"What moves is neither the branches nor the wind, but only your mind."

2008년 5월에 썼던 편지를

2024년도에 다시 읽어보며...
